Dandelion skirt

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Penelope, our customer asked if she could use the Fields range fabric to make a skirt? I thought "why not?" and made one using the pink dandelion fabric. With a summer trip planned I have a feeling it will be the perfect light weight cotton for a 26 degree day.
We are very excited about our trip and I must say I am not sleeping well. I will let you in on a secret; I am always the first to wake up on Christmas day which is much the same as tomorrow for me. Patrick thinks I am the child of the family–mmhmm that is true in so many ways.

Hey Saffron, your dandelion skirt is just so adorable! I wish I looked that good in a skirt ;) the pockets give it just the right touch.

Fields quilt

Saffron Craig - Thursday, July 09, 2009
This is my next project using the fields fabrics. This is the initial sketch which I will use as a starting point to cut out the quilt from. The center squares are 50cm. It will be a decent size quilt.

These fabrics work so well together-I will be placing an order over the weekend.

This looks fantastic. I am just loving the pink and yellow together, yet I never would have thought of it. Its having 3 boys..., ha ha, not really, I shouldn't blame them for my deficiencies.

Fabulous colors and design. Very ethereal. It makes me think of cotton candy at the State Fair.

Owl nesting quilt

Saffron Craig - Thursday, July 09, 2009
I have almost finished the owl nesting quilt. Its lined with the Trees Mignon which makes it a reversible quilt.
I am going to (at least try to) draw up the pattern and put it into a kit before we head overseas next week. It's easy to make but a very bold and striking quilt.

Blogged

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, July 08, 2009
At least once a week I look at prints and pattern blog and today I found me. Sweet. If you have not seen this blog before check it out, it is amazing. http://printpattern.blogspot.com/. There is also a book which is very inspiring.

During my surfing I also discovered I am a featured shop on http://www.handmadekids.com.au/. A terrific web site especially if you are looking for kids stuff. Which we all are.

On the flip side I am sad about Micheal Jackson. I love what his friends have said in his tribute tonight. Genius! Micheal you make me think of love.

Daphny

Saffron Craig - Monday, July 06, 2009
My mother in law Daphny has made us beautiful quilts, which I refer to a lot for their technique. These are two she has made for her Blossom, Windmills because what little girl would not like a Hollandish quilt with windmills on. Patrick and I chose a lot of the fabrics for this quilt and posted them over to her–this was before I thought of designing my own fabrics. I chose Aboriginal art inspired fabrics, emu footprints and yellow as we did not know at that stage if we were having a girl or a boy. She has done such a stunning job, hand stitched quilting and so perfectly neat.

The second Quilt Butterflies is entirely hand stitched, it is absolutely beautiful. It is 2 by 2.5 meters. So vast- what love. It is made up of smaller blocks hand paper-pieced. Both of these quilts are used every single day, what an inspiration. She accidentally sent it by sea mail and we thought it was lost then 4 months later it arrived. I cried when I laid my hands on it. Sequoia sleeps under it every night.

Daphny taught me all the quilting techniques I know, paper piecing, block piecing, basting, quilting, and gave me a book which I follow for other techniques. So as I start to pack up her goodies to take with me to Holland I wanted to share a piece of Daphny with you. So far the package is 10 kilograms. Amazing woman I can't wait to see you.

And we'd love to see some photos of those quilts - they sound beautiful. Was this post meant to include pics? For they are not showing for me.

Off to Europe

Saffron Craig - Saturday, July 04, 2009
We bought our tickets in January and now we are counting down until we fly out to Holland where Patrick’s parents live. We cant wait to visit Oma and Opa and enjoy long, long days together. The Dutch storybooks are out and Sequoia is reiterating those long words. She is looking forward to the ponies nearby Oma's village she can ride. I am looking forward to quilting tips from her who is a genius quilter and my teacher. Not to mention the villages, the architecture and galleries.

Then I am leaving the family and going across the water to London, my best mate Sam is living near the London zoo so I am kipping on her couch. I am researching  cool shops to visit, shows to go to. Art galleries to inspire me, market pieces to fill up my full bag. It is summer over there and we are in the midst of winter, if you have any tips on what to see I would love to hear about them. I found myself swearing under my breath at how much there is to see in London. In a good way. Sam said the food has improved a lot as well. Yay, a proper pub. I wonder if I will make it to a yoga class? mmmm.

Then I meet up again to see the other half of the family, to enjoy the last part of our holiday in Switzerland. We have our own flat in Zurich - yippee. In Switzerland I plan to swim in lakes and hike mountains and see many many cows and alps. I will shop too as I can't help myself. Oh yes and we will drop over the border to France to eat. Well that is the plan.

Cute little bottoms. Can she really say those long words?
Sandra Pendle commented on 08-Jul-2009 05:32 AM
That gnome book in this post is my most favourite book ever! It is just so much fun. I like to believe that it's all true. Sometime i think that we have a city Gnome that lives at my place in Toronto, Ontario. We wondered what you would leave for a city Gnome. would it be beer or a metro ticket?
Have fun on your trip!

The start of a new quilt kit

Saffron Craig - Friday, July 03, 2009
I started a new quilt kit this week using the owl range. It will be an easy quilt for beginners or for the time poor. I hope to finish it over the weekend. I just took some quick photographs before the day light ends- in five minutes!

Centimeters and Inches

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, July 01, 2009
Can I just say I love centimeters? I find inches are not for me. Even though I now own all quilting equipment in inches. Why is this? Decimals are so much easier. My brain hurts when it has to keep converting inches back to centimeters. Actually I am amazed at how much maths I do everyday. Yes, I know that wondrous quilting land America is in inches.

Map of the metric system

And this is a map of where the metric system is official...you can read more about it on Wikipedia.

I love metric too but don't you know we are ruled by America so everyone must do what they say, even though as your map shows they are in the minority
Gay McDonell commented on 02-Jul-2009 11:23 AM
Yeah - it took some getting used to - but now I actually prefer inches to be honest ... and I think it's interesting that you said "math" and not "maths" as most Aussies do .... sew many Americanisms sneak into our culture- hey it's the 4th of July on Saturday!!!
Erin commented on 03-Jul-2009 11:43 AM
Yes, US please come aboard. I miss my metric. Haven't been able to adapt to this imperial system since I moved from Canada.
