A quilt from windy Holland

Saffron Craig - Thursday, March 03, 2011
Daphny, my Mother in Law, took with her some of my fabrics to her home in Zeeland. Busy crafty lady that she is, Daphny took no time at all to design and make up this quilt. She emailed me this picture, taken on a very windy day in Holland and it was the first day she'd left the house in ten days cause it had been so freezing cold! She has even offered to send me her very own pattern to share with you. YAY. I just got to get Patrick to translate and write it up into a PDF. The quilt is in the post so should be soon.

The center panel features the Elk Landscape which is now down to its last few meters, sniff, and the the other fabrics is a selection of different fabrics of mine, like the Little Birds, Blossom Patch, Ginkgo Blossoms, Geese Bubbles and Bird Trees.

Would you like a pattern or a kit for this quilt?

That is lovely but then this it uses my favourite fabric of yours! I'd love a kit for it but I'll have to save for ages to get it.

Where in Zeeland does Daphny live? My Mum lives in Heile, Zeeland, south of Oostburg. You can see Belgium from her living room as the border is just the other side of the field from them.

Moving to Margaret River

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, March 01, 2011
Last night before I went to bed I looked at the hardly been played with dolls house and decided to make it exciting. We found all the furniture, I even managed to find the loo. I decorated the house and put all the family to bed. It took a good while.
I thought if we played doll house it might encourage my little one to use it and stop driving cars. Yep she loves cars. She woke up delighted discovering the renewed dolls house. And we played. I was so proud!

Then I thought I might read the new Frankie magazine. Next time I looked up she had trucks (recycled plastic containers) filled up with all the insides of her dolls house driving them around the room!

"What are you doing?" I asked.
"We're moving to Margaret River. I just can't fit the fridge".
Ah well. I tried.

I have one just like this too!! She loves all the "little" things, that come with bigger toys and these get bundled into the Dora van or barbie car and "become" other things, than what they are intended!! Perhaps its like cutting up perfectly good fabric into shapes and then resewing into other shapes, to make a quilt, or pillow case or cushion or....or.....or.......yes, where DO they get it from!!

Oh that really made me smile. I hope she enjoys the journey.
Marni Franks commented on 01-Mar-2011 08:50 PM
She needs to learn how to tetris pack a car like my dad. :)

Absolutely adorable.

I used to play with trucks as a kid too, bears as well. never had much time for dolls.
elsa hart commented on 02-Mar-2011 03:06 AM
I, too, loved playing with cars and guns (the cowboy kind) when I was a little girl. Had the whole cowgirl outfit with a holster and hat and boots! It was wonderful! I did have dolls too, but they took a back seat till I was about 9.
Love the doll house, it's really cute!
Susan Potts commented on 08-Mar-2011 12:21 PM
Wow! What an industrious little girl you have!? Could never guess where that came from! :)

I grew up with 3 sisters and we did have dolls, but I much rather played cowboys and indians with the boy that lived next door, or on hot summer days drench them from the garden hose when the boys were riding their scooters up and down the street! But all that is a very very long time ago! And I still prefer to talk and play games with the boys rather than the girls! Love it whilst it lasts, because you will miss it when she grows up and gets into ,,, makeup and nailpolish and clothes!

I thought to celebrate I should make her a cape for her 1st birthday. The pattern is found in Make it Perfect pattern book. It took me an hour or so to cut out and to make, it uses Pink Dandelions and Magic Spots. Which you can buy here.

Love the girl, love the name, love the fabric, love the cape :)

Oh she looks gorgeous, and the cape is just lovely. I too had two premmie babies, my eldest daughter came at 28wks, 5days and second at 36 weeks - got a bit further that time. If you have a moment there is a photo of them now at 6yrs old and nearly 2 years old on my blog. Both also doing well, but it is certainly a rocky start. Cheers and best wishes.

Inspirational design books I like to share

Saffron Craig - Thursday, February 24, 2011
I have never shared my love of books before. I don't know why.
It is a real joy and a privilege for me to own such beautiful books. To thumb through the pages and see all the amazing talent in the world. I always enjoy adding to my design library. I suppose when I heard of Angus and Robertson going into receivership last week I felt compelled to encourage you to buy books from your local book shop because if we don't they simply won't be there in the future, I am lucky enough to have a Berkelouw book shop up the road that has some great books.

As a designer I  sometimes get stuck with a design. Patrick is an amazing art director, he can see where my design is not working and give me constructive criticism, I nearly always feel a sense of relief to have that pointed out to me. Then other times I want to push a design that bit further and I find myself looking for inspiration in books about illustration. Because pushing and refining and knowing when to stop makes for a good design. Books are also a way to be in touch with the creative world.

Here are a four of the 10 design books I have treated myself to this year.

Print&Pattern by Bowie Style

Prints and Pattern by Bowie Style is a a-z collection of surface designers around the world with a blurb attached to each set of illustrations. The book follows on from her terrific blog from where she is based in London. It is nice to have all the surface designs housed in one book. Below are a few of the numerous works from the book that I find most  inspiring. It is a good book to flick through, a few of the illustrators come form Australia.

Saffron's stack of desgin books

Patterns by Drusilla Cole,  is quite diverse and so cool. How about the illustration on the bottom left which is all threads. If I would have handed that in at Uni I would have been asked to trim the threads maybe even given a fail, trimming threads is not my strong point. I love the colours in the top right design.

This is one of my most thumbed books, probably as it is so creative, so free so diverse and so me.

Patterns

Orla Kiely's book Pattern is a must own if you are a designer, manufacturer, lover of fashion. Orla has been a visiting lecturer at the RCA and Chelsea College of Art and owns a chain of stunning boutiques. When I was in London last I discovered her Covent Garden store and was in raptures how gorgeous  it is. She is just amazing, Not only is this book great eye candy but I have read it cover to cover a few times now. Orla Keily was recently awarded an OBE. This book has also helped me to photograph my products better as she explains what she looks for in a photo shoot.

Pattern by Orla Kiely

Often I look at design books for solutions to a design, how to fill a space, or end a stem for example. The fourth book Illusive - Contemporary Illustration has helped me to find a way to push my designs. There are three books in this series, we own two now. This book has about 20 bookmarks in it for me to look at and find inspiration. It covers all forms of illustration even a chapter called "towards painting". Yum, Yum, Yum. It is also the most pricey book but I am sure it will still be relevant in a decade.

Books books books. Love them, need them. I have always gotten in trouble for reading!

All the books are wonderful ~ I'm going to have to go out to the book store and find them. Thanks so much for sharing.

I have been trying for a couple years now to get my hands on an Orla teapot - can't get one here! So sad.

But you are so right about the need to buy books from Australian book stores - support authors, support the local book shop. I beg anyone who reads this blog, don't buy books online from overseas. So many of you make your own clothes, or fabric and hope that people will pay for your items. In everything we do we should be buying local.

Wow.... they look sooo inspirational.. i bet you could just sit for a min and get lost for hours.. Thanks for showing them Saffron xx Hope your little blonde has settled in nicely... miss you xx

Library bag—"but Mum, everyone has a blue plastic one."

"But Mum everyone has a blue plastic one."
"You are not having a blue plastic one. I am going to make you one. So which fabrics shall I use? You can choose."
"Can I have three? Can you make it stripey and put this one at the bottom, this one in the middle and this one at the top?"
"I will see what I can do!"

Wonder what she will say? Better than the pillow case I sent her with last week.

Ha ha Saffron, that's cute, I hope she loves it, am I right in assuming they are carrying blue plastic grocery bags??. I hate those reusable shopping bags unless they are for groceries, seeing people on their way to work, all dressed up, and carrying a grungy old shopping bag UUURRGHH, don't they know they could just whip up a simple bag out of your design range and look like a million bucks??? LOL, ok, I am getting silly now..... back to work ;)
Susan Potts commented on 22-Feb-2011 04:51 PM
And the best part? She won't loose it because everyone will know it's her special book bag, especially the teacher!!! Happy Days!

New products in our shop: Magical Lands cushions you buy ready made

Saffron Craig - Saturday, February 19, 2011
We are now selling ready made cushions in our online shop made from my Magical Lands fabrics. I had just redone my living room in Magical Lands when my stylish French friend Eglantine asked, "Why don't you sell them?"

Yes, why don't we? So we took some photos of them and then added them to our online shop here.
Thanks to those who ask me for products! Well, here they are.

My living room makes me feel like nesting and relaxing with a good book with my little one.

The cushions come in 3 sizes and they're professionally sewn up with a side zipper. Fully machine washable and you have a choice of feathers or polyester inserts.

Star cushion

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, February 15, 2011
Cutting up cushions this week made me think of stars and the Chinese year of the rabbit. I was wondering what has gotten into me this year; all I want to do is travel. I got the travel bug for sure. I have already been to WA for a week, total paradise there, then down the NSW South Coast and I am already thinking where we can go next. I lay in bed for an hour last night imagining all the places I could visit. Then it dawned on me that last time it was the year of the rabbit I enjoyed  9 months of travel hopping through Europe with my then boyfriend now husband.

Well, today I should have been making the compulsory library bag as my little one who loves loves loves books will not be allowed to remove books form the library with out one! Says note! NO way was I buying the horrible plastic one with the school logo. She gotta have something funky. So while I contemplate that I will sew up my little star.

Sweet.

You know you really should add some glitter.

Saffron Craig - Sunday, February 13, 2011
For my niece's fifth birthday I stretched a piece of Magical Lands fabric over a canvas to decorate her bedroom.

I eavesdropped on my five year old's conversation with the birthday girl—"You will have to imagine the fairies. I am sure they would like to live there and there and there (pointing at the canvas). Though I think Mummy really should have added some glitter."

When in doubt, ALWAYS add glitter! But seriously, I love how pretty this fabric and yet so Australian (typically our landscape doesn't really do 'pretty'.)
Kylie commented on 14-Feb-2011 01:36 PM
Priceless, It looks great glitterless and all.
