I have made up a couple of new bundles for Christmas

Saffron Craig - Thursday, November 18, 2010
I have made up a sampler pack with 9 of my designs in fat 8ths (25 x 50cm). You know in the spirit of Christmas giving and all that. A bit from each range to go together! Especially for you who visits me all the time and has yet to be tempted. Or as a gift for your craft friend for Christmas. You might as well get them something they like? Right? Ummhmm, did I say that? No that was your thoughts! Cheeky me.

Saffron's Sampler - 9 Fat Eights for $35.00
Saffron's Sampler - 9 Fat Eights for $29.00

Oh and then I was chatting to a customer and I thought that these would look nice made up into stars and love hearts stuffed and looped  in the Christmas Tree. So here is a bundle of Christmas festivities. I am going to make a table runner.

Christmas Bundle - 3x 50cm $35.00

I have my dutch Mother and Father in Law arriving very soon! The count down started weeks ago. I am looking forward to seeing their faces on Christmas day when they get to wear a summer frock or shorts and head to the beach. No freezing for them this year, just sweltering and long days and so much food. I am cooking for the whole family. Actually that is in my head. Patrick will end up doing most of it and I will have my feet in a bucket of cold water.

"Off the Rails" quilt kit in Bird Tree indigo fabrics

Saffron Craig - Sunday, November 14, 2010
I have been busy with finalizing designs for the Australian Quilt Market. That kind of had me a bit overwhelmed until Wednesday evening when all my design work, fabric samples, bits and bobs were picked up so I could no longer think about them. Yep they are in a truck on their way to Melbourne.

Off the rails quilt by Kate Conklin with Saffron Craig Bird Tree fabrics

I was super keen to make up the Off the Rails quilt by Kate Conklin Designs. I thought after Kate''s efforts to design and make up this beautiful quilt with all its instructions I wanted to have a play to see how it looks in the Bird Tree indigo range.

Off the rails quilt by Kate Conklin with Saffron Craig Bird Tree fabrics

Kate explains the slash and stack method so well. I really love how each row is different making the top fascinating to patchwork. The colours pull the quilt together. I could make this quilt so many times and would have a different result each time.

So far this week I have made the top, which actually took me only a couple of hours each night since Wednesday, you know the feeling, the child's in bed and it's craft time.

This is what the kit looks like when it is posted out to you.

I hope I might get it finished for the AQM and tuck this one into my suitcase as well. But only if I find the strength to baste it. Summer just started here in Sydney and it is a big quilt, so it's very hot on my lap!
Kate's instructions finish it at 133 x 192cm. But how much fun to follow instructions to make a quilt as usually I make it up as I go. Much easier to use Kate's brain...

I also have to think about how to quilt it?  Mhhm, by hand or machine? How would you quilt it? I am interested in your thoughts.

I have had such lovely and generous comments on my blog recently so I have decided to reward these two special comments with a gift voucher:

These are fabulous! I have two little boys and I can't wait to get my hands on these fabrics and create something special!
Kylie can you please contact me so I can send you out your gift voucher.

Absolutely gorgeous but then I am a total sucker for your fabric. I really would not hang the quilt in a mulberry tree through - as you know, once the juice stains,it never comes out again! I used to gorge myself on the fruit from the tree in my grandparents house and that has brought back a whole load of happy childhood memories!

I am also saying a huge thanks to all of you who have the confidence to share your thoughts on this blog.

Your fabrics are so wonderful, each and every collection. I'm closing in on a couple of places up here that stock at least some of them, and that means I can afford the postage. *S*....In the meantime, I keep capturing the pics so I can at least look and swoon.

Ooh, it looks lovely in the indigo range! I'm so glad you're enjoying the pattern. As for quilting, you could outline quilt the along the top and bottom of the strips a couple of times on the white. Can't wait to see it at Quilt Market :)

I really like this pattern! I do have to say though, having boys, I prefer the indigo range. I will have to talk to my husband and see if he will lift my fabric ban, or hurry up and finish the projects I have going at the moment :) So much fabric, so little time.

I really, really want some of this line!! Saving my pennies. It is so hard to find good fabric in the purple family. (my favorite color) I also can't wait for your new line. How do you find time to design and quilt so much?

I love your Bird Tree fabrics in indigo! They are playful yet sophisticated enough for a young adult - I'm thinking of my 23 year old daughter who loves blue and doesn't go for florals. Your Off the Rails pattern reminds me of stacks of books, if you look at it sideways.

Just love this pattern in your fabrics... this would be great for a new quilter - I know two...

New fabric range—introducing Magical Lands

Saffron Craig - Friday, November 12, 2010

Magical Lands is a homage to my love for Kata Tjuta, or as it was known, the Olgas. In the 90’s I wrote my thesis on Australian Woman’s fiber arts and I took a month to drive form Melbourne through Central Australia to interview and research Aboriginal women in Central Australia.
In between the different regions are vast areas of land. I really appreciated how huge Australia really is. On those long drives I stopped at some amazingly beautiful places.  I also did a lot of walking through the pristine wilderness and deserts and the occasional oasis.

I saw Kata Tjuta the first time from a distance of maybe 100 kilometers. It rose out of a flat desert in lovely bubbly shaped mountains changing with the intensity of the sun. In my heart I knew that I was witnessing a sacred place, especially to me, it is a place that I have returned to many times in my meditations. Kata Tjuta  holds a serious place in my heart and its vibration is one of  beauty and happiness and translated into this fabric with a playfulness, lots of patternation and bold colours.

Magical Lands consists of six designs: Magical Land, Snowy Woods, Tree Pods, Magical Trees, Magic Spot and Ginkgo Blossoms in green.

Snowy Woods—I added the falling snow after being in a blizzard in Perisher Valley winter this year.

Saffron Craig - Magical Trees fabric

Magical Trees—this was the original tree and the first element that I re-drew form my sketch book into Illustrator. A very graphic print and I am so loving the Ming green.

Saffron Craig - Tree Pods fabric

Tree Pods is a large scale print of mountains with trees growing on them in a cut-out style. I cannot wait to start using this design!

I loved channeling the essence of Kata Tjuta while I designed and refined these fabrics. The serenity and focus I felt will hopefully translate into the fabrics and then again into the products that you make with this range.

The strike-offs arrived just recently and I was thrilled. I enjoyed every moment of designing this range and it came about quite quickly. It is another bold bright range that really feels very “me” but at the same time it's quite different from what I have previously designed. It comes in a red colourway too and I  hope to post a sneak peak of that soon.

This range is due early 2011 and we will be taking pre-orders at the Melbourne Quilt Market next week. I will be sure to send out a newsletter once it is here so if your're not already reading my monthly news you can sign up on the right.

I always value your thoughts so please leave a comment.
Which is your favorite design out of the above? Have you got a story about visiting Kata Tjuta?

I haven't been there but they remind me of New Zealand where I was in September for the first time. I commented to my husband that if you were going to design a country - it would be New Zealand. Little round hills with wee "toy town" type trees dotted around and all the gazillions of sheep and cows! Gorgeous Saffron!

OMGolly! This new range is stunning!! The colours are fantasic!! I can see a great skirt being made out of Tree Pods, or curtains!! and of course the fun quilts that could be made with this range! Kata Tjuta is such a special and magical place. I went soon after I'd done a big trip through Europe so I was a bit travel-lagged but Ullaru and Kata Tjuta just blew me away with their beauty and majestic, timeless quality.

Forest Elementals Quilt - how I made it

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, November 02, 2010
As part of the Blogger's Quilt Festival I thought I would  also show you this quilt that I am working on. It uses fabrics that I have designed around elements of the forest, hence the name of the fabrics Forest Elementals.
I added some lovely brown cotton to the three fabrics. Equally I thought pale blue or aquamarine would have worked in harmoniously as well.

Saffron Craig - Forest Elementals quilt aquamarine

This design uses the slash and stack method. Every time I make a quilt with this method I get more ideas. It really is a terrific way to make a quilt.

Saffron Craig - Forest Elementals quilt aquamarine

Using 3 x 50cm of fabrics which I cut in half width-wise and length-wise. The fabric pieces measured 25cm x 56cm, I stacked the fabrics on top of each other so they were exactly the same shape. Then using a rotary cutter and ruler cut through the layers of fabric on a bit of an angle and at different widths from about 4cm to 6cm.

The layers were shuffled within the cut piles of fabric so the top rows of fabric looked how I wanted the quilt to look. I wanted it to have a arty random feel. Once I had the fabrics arranged in a pleasing manner I sewed the top layer of each pile together. I repeated this until I had sewn all the piles of fabric together to make one continuous strip or block.  Yep I made about 20 trips form my cutting mat to my sewing machine, ironing as I went.

Did I get confused? Well a bit. But I just trimmed the mistakes away when I cut it into a 25cm wide block.  It is a good idea if you trim the blocks to top-stitched to prevent it fraying or falling apart before it is sewn to the quilt top.

Once I have three blocks of equal lengths i sewed a white border between the blocks. This determined the size of the quilt. I could have made the quilt double the size with longer blocks.

I was tempted to sew the three strips or blocks together with no white in between them but I changed my mind and will try that in another quilt. I chose to put a white border around the strips to give it a modern, clean feel. I will try to make a completely patterned quilt again using this method with another range of fabrics I have. Just the thought makes me want to stay up all night.

I have been holding onto this quilt, It does have a home to go to but there is something that makes me just want to keep it nearby.

Saffron Craig - Forest Elementals quilt aquamarine

I am a hand quilter so the entire quilt is hand quilted with white Perle thread. I find it so relaxing to hand quilt and I think I will add a bit more stitching to it still.

Saffron Craig - Forest Elementals quilt aquamarine

We are lucky enough to have a Mulberry tree in our back yard. It is huge and full of fruit. Every time I visit the compost bin, or washing line I gorge myself It is soo yummy. I think I have eaten about 3 kilos in the past week. I get very red stained hands! Not good for photographing this quilt! Oops. I have even been making pies with all the fruit. The neighbour's children had a lovely picnic with its lush fruits too.

I keep staring at it thinking which way will you go? I think this quilt can go any which way. So now to decide how to hang it?  I like the stripes vertical and parallel. How would you hang it?

Thanks so much to Amy for having a creative side and getting us all talking and visiting each others blogs. I have seen so many quilts to inspire me!

Happy Blogger's Quilt Festival.

Saffron Craig's 9 block Bird Tree quilt for Blogger’s Quilt Festival

Saffron Craig - Friday, October 29, 2010
It's the start of Blogger's Quilt Festival from Amy's Creative Side and I thought I'd share this quilt I've just finished making.
Saffron Craig - 9 block Bird Tree quilt for Bloggers Quilt Festival

This quilt started with a sketch in my Moleskin. I made seven blocks in a sort of log cabin feel using the Bird Tree range in purple when the fabrics arrived a few weeks ago. I was just so eager to cut into my new fabrics and have a play. All the blocks were different shapes and sizes, I had no plan for a quilt top, I was merely enjoying making blocks.

Saffron Craig - Bird Tree quilt for Bloggers Quilt Festival

Then I sewed all the blocks together with wide pink borders to make up a quilt top. I let it sit for a few days but didn't really like it, just too much pink. So one day when I was in a reconstructive mood I went crazy with my cutter and cut out each block of the quilt leaving behind only a few centimeters of the pink fabric. It was quite therapeutic actually.

I had the blocks stare at me for another few weeks until I found the time and energy to sew a few together again. Then I realized the quilt would need 9 blocks! What to do? I was so over making this quilt by then I could not make up another few blocks in the same style, then the aha moment occurred,  I cut out two identical rectangles of the Tree Garden fabric. One at the top and one at the bottom. I think it added a bit of harmony to the quilt. Certainly saved me from procrastinating and not finishing this quilt.

Are you an experimental quilter? If so you could make this quilt with a 50cm bundle of the Bird Tree fabrics.

Then to my favourite part, the hand-stitching. Sewing the three layers of the quilt together running a needle through the layers, I just love it. I wanted a quick straight line approach for  this quilt. I put very wide (7cm) masking tape over the quilt in random zig zag lines and stitched around the outside of the tape. Lovely easy stitching.

Saffron Craig - Bird Tree quilt for Bloggers Quilt Festival - detail

I bound the quilt using 50cm of the Blossom Patch fabric because it forms a nice stripe as a binding.

I asked my sculptural dolls what they thought. Quietly they said they thought it's all right. Having no arms they can't quite put a finger on something that seemed so familiar?

How about you? Do you like it? I am keeping this one.

I have the same fabrics in another colourway if blue is more your thing.

Fabulous skirt pattern and kit —Make-it-Perfect's A-line skirt

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, October 27, 2010
Funny how the universe seems to act in ways that make me smile. I have been noticing a bit of a street uniform, an a-line skirt worn with a t-shirt and flip flops or clogs. I have found myself being asked by friends and family for a different take on an a-line skirt. Said friend asks "I love a-line skirts but I need a change"?

And you know, here it is—a great variation on the a-line skirt! Toni of Make it Perfect has created just such patterns, the A+ skirt. Who has been whispering in her ear I would like to know?

See the a-line skirts shape is really flattering on most of the population's figures of all ages, it just looks funky and fashionable and it is slimming to boot. It is soo good, it really is! I have already made two for myself. I love the A+ skirt with the pockets so I have somewhere to put my things like keys, phone, toys. In fact I don't buy clothes these days without pockets but that's just me. I am the creative type that is very much in the moment. And pockets help me with those moments! Somewhere to shove stuff into.

These are the skirts Toni made. And thanks Toni for using Saffron Craig fabrics. We really appreciate your support.

So four options for you to sew and create and if you would like another combination please let me know.

Then I sewed up two variations for myself. I altered the pattern a bit and took 3cm from the top of the waistband so that it is a bit shorter and sits below my waist.

I love how the Bird on Leaves  has a bit of an apron feel and I used the Little Birds purple for the waist and pockets for a nice contrast.

That is me wearing the Tree Garden fabric with the Little Birds indigo as the pockets and waist band.

How stunning! Where did you get those fantastic shoes? I will be looking to make a few of these skirts for summer, well done Saffron (and Toni)

These are gorgeous - I've made a couple of A lines recently but these are just that bit more fancy! I love make it perfect girls pinny patterns as they are so simple so I look forward to these.

What I'd really love (pretty please) is an A line with pockets and with a pleat at the front to insert a different fabric - a bit like one of the pinny patterns (can't remember which one but I think it was #3?)... Pockets/waistband in same colour but contrast inside the pleat...

New quilt kit by Kate Conklin - Skittles

Saffron Craig - Saturday, October 23, 2010
A big congratulations to Kate Conklin for her pregnancy of her 3rd child. Kate shared a heartfelt story on her blog of how grateful she is for this pregnancy, actually I am sure it rang true with many people. I am certainly very happy for you Kate.

While growing this baby Kate has managed to create this beautiful new quilt called Skittles, reminiscent of the kids pin bowling game.

It's available in our shop in 2 sizes, as a baby quilt and a throw quilt, and comes in 2 colourways, one for girls and one for boys. Though I have sold a lot of the indigo Bird Tree range for girls. My neighbor even asked me to make her daughter a quilt featuring the Bird Tree in sky blue.

Thank you Kate for another great quilt! Thanks also for all your support and kindness.

If you haven't tried the slash-and-stack method why not give it  a go? It's really addictive and suitable for any level of quilting experience you may have.

And on a side note, we have nearly sold out of all of the Bird Tree in magenta and purple, so there's only a few of the Skittles kits as pictured above available, please be quick and don't miss out if you like it!

Wow, such a gorgeous quilt. I love the effect of 'organised randomness'. You must love seeing what others do with your fabrics. I am going to make the fairy hearts quilt, I have collected the fabrics of your range (that I could find) with some limited substitution. Just having hand surgery, and the other hand once I am healed on the left side, I cannot foresee me doing much sewing for a couple of months :(, being a sewer (everyday!) this is a huge inconvenience. Until I heal, I will have to be satisfied looking at other peoples sewing (oh, and maybe planning my future projects :D )

New fabrics - Bird Tree range in indigo and dew green

Saffron Craig - Thursday, October 14, 2010
So, I'd like to introduce the Bird Tree range in indigo, morning dew green and sky blue. Lovely fresh harmonious colours. It's actually the original colours I designed these fabrics in, but we decided to get the purple colourway printed first as it coordinated so well with the Forest Elementals. If you're not familiar with our Bird Tree fabric range you can read about each design in detail here from my previous blog posts.

The Bird Tree's second colour way is here, its lovely and soft and ahh I am so happy to have it to play with. Actually a small quantity of sampling has arrived and we'll have an exclusive pre-sale next week, so stay posted on facebook and look out for a newsletter.

Bird Tree, yellow birds on black line drawings of trees with a beautiful blue sky. Perfect for the lovely Spring weather we are experiencing.

Tree Forest is a large repeat design. I have been hanging to sew this one into so many things. The small tree forest clusters over big circles of colour and is especially striking in the red. This design has numerous elements to play around with. I love the indigo and the bright red and I designed it so it could mix in with many of my other of my designs, such as the Owls and the Trees Mignon in particular.

Detail of the Tree Forest, in indigo, red and pale blue

Blossom Patch, dew green & indigo with a tiny yellow flower in the center.

The Little Birds in indigo ( I am so loving the indigo) with yellow birds is such a fun fabric. I really love the depth of the indigo. I am pleased with the freedom the design creates. This design changed so many time before I decided on this being the final choice. I wanted the entire range to have a sense of space that you can feel in Australia. I think this fabric captures that.

Little Birds, indigo & yellow

Bird Spot in morning dew green with a tiny grey spot and the yellow birds. Funny I nearly did not include this design in the range and it is the one that has sold the fastest in the first colourway. In fact it has nearly sold out. So lucky I did include this design at the last minute for all of those who are young at heart. Or have a young heart to create for. Like I do.

Bird Spot, green & indigo

We have also reprinted the Ginkgo blossom in red which teems in nicely with the Tree Garden in Indigo.

As always, I'm keen to read your comments on these fabrics as after all I'm designing them for all the happy homes you live in! Now for me to get sewing! Or even better pack some off to your homes! Yippee.

The bird tree is too cute! This is the first time I really saw the actual bird tree and I think I'm in love. I know that there are different colorways; so, I'll have to keep any eye out for them!

Great work Saffron! When I started sewing I was 20, that was 20 years ago, I had a baby boy back then, and was frustrated with the limited fabric designs on the market. My poor boy had to endure block colour, or that ugly fluro paint splash fabric left over from the 80's. You are amongst a tiny group of very talented fabric designers that have really made a difference to what our kids are wearing, and the decor in their rooms. Thank you for being such a talented person!!

Hi Saffron, I haven't checked out your blog for a while and I've missed out. The new designs are so fab, particularly all the bugs and the fishes. You are very clever! And I'm very impressed at how much you seem to fit into your time - I would struggle to write the blog posts between pre-school runs, never mind design and sell fabrics.

Love the designs and colors. Those are really fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

Preview of my new range Beetle Bugs in red, green and grey

Saffron Craig - Sunday, October 10, 2010
Yippee, the strike-offs for the second colour way is here and it looks just as I hoped it would. Lovely dark red mixed with a light green and mid grey.

Saffron Craig - Beetle Bugs fabric range red and orange

There's six designs in this range. Here is what I called them starting from the left:

  1. Snails and Ladders: this is a large repeat design at 64 cm but with all the detail I think every inch will create its own special fabrics.
  2. Bug Spot: cute bugs are caught on a spot and are blowing in the wind defying gravity. Light green spots with mid grey bugs on a warm cream background.
  3. Bug Wings: the most graphic and textural design of the range. The bugs wings form a dense spot-like pattern in a light green with a tiny splash of a red dot on a light background.
  4. Beetle Bug: the namesake on the range. The bugs are caught inside bubbles and being tossed and turned in the breeze.
  5. Running Bugs: I just love running stitch, so I thought I might take a pun with this one! Little Beetle Bugs are crawling along the running stitches to create a stripe. The parallel lines decorate the fabric all over the cloth and the repeat is 64cm. The dashed lines are dark red on cream coloured fabric.
  6. Bug party: a super dazzling fun fabric playing with the idea of bugs having a great time. Some are flying, while some are caught in a breeze holding onto a leaf as they fly.  Other bug's are chasing each other playing games. Dark red with bright red and a lovely orangy yellow.

This range is certainly one I am looking forward to getting printed. I am sure that all these colours will also mix with the colourway I posted a couple of weeks ago. Yep, I took a photo and I think there will be 12 fabrics all up that combine nicely. We will be printing them probably this year, sooner than planned thanks to all the wonderful feedback I have received. Thank you very much.

Though now to decide which colourway comes first? Are you looking forward to the blue and orange version of Beetle Bugs or the red and green version of the Beetle bugs?
