Donation of a fabric bundle for Cuddle Craft Collective

Saffron Craig - Sunday, March 18, 2012

I have donated a bundle of fabrics to Cuddle Craft collective who aims to give hope to Children and Families in Need. This particular auction is running a campaign to raise $2,000 towards the provision of critical nutrition to 160 children at the Bonga Feeding Centre in Ethiopia.

This will provide a daily glass of milk (essential calcium) and twice weekly eggs (essential protein) to 160 children at the centre for one year.

Cuddle Craft Collective is a group of socially conscious souls who have joined together to make a difference to the lives of families in need. They are based in Queensland, Australia and have supporters from all around the world.

The auction starts today with many designers and manufactures on board, pop over to see all the goodies. Share the love.

How you see life?

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Late last night as I was sewing the binding onto my latest quilt I found myself with no thread both on the top and on the bottom of my machine. I opened up both hatches to find 8 empty bobbins cases.

I always fill all the Bobbin cases in one go doing the lot at once. I don't like empty bobbin cases.  Also no thread on the reel. This is a bizarre coincidence! I only needed to sew another meter, it happened as I was on the 4th side of the binding...

What would you do in this case?

Would you think the world was against you and quit?

Would you go to bed?

Would you swear?

Would you not even batter an eyelid?

Would you laugh out loud, thinking this stuff always happens to you?

I did sigh; this has never happened. I felt bewildered. Then grateful that I buy thread in bulk. I knew I needed to finish the binding because good telly was about to start and I wanted to take the time to hand-stitch the back. So hurriedly I wound enough thread onto the bobbin to make it until the end and next time I sew I will fill all eight bobbins with thread.

I dug out a new reel of thread and finished machining the binding just in time to sit on my sewing chair to hand stitch the binding.

I guess your answer depends on how you see life. Love to read your thoughts.

I always seem to run out of thread with the last side of a quilt to sew the binding onto... I think it is quilter's karma for finishing another project! I suppose because I expect it to happen, I just suck it up and keep going until it is finished and
just accept the fact that it always happens....

I'd just roll with it, life happens.
Victoria commented on 15-Mar-2012 10:26 AM
If like you I had spare thread I would have wound one bobbing and finished the job. The rest of the bobbin winding would have waited for the next day :-)
Kirstin Bokor commented on 15-Mar-2012 11:54 AM
That would do my head in - but I have no patience when it comes to sewing. I think it is the posture you need - it gives me a back ache and I get so frustrated. But in other areas of my life the same thing would not bother me - I just have a short fuse/hate
relationship with inanimate objects. It's true - the vacuum cleaner makes me swear like a drunk sailor. - I would have probably dug out the glue!
Kim Apted commented on 17-Mar-2012 10:30 PM
Both threads running out is an annoying coincidence! However, I do seem to run out of the bobbin thread on the last seam of a garment more often than not. And I do swear. And grit my teeth. Then fill up the bobbin and finish the damn thing. :P

New book - The Name of the Wind

Saffron Craig - Sunday, March 11, 2012

It's been a while since I found a real page turner, a fantasy one at that. I am all lost in another world and it's great. So no time for listening to music today, it was all about reading.

The back cover says

In these pages you will come to know Kvothe as a notorious magician, an accomplished thief, a masterful musician, and an infamous assassin. But The Name of the Wind is so much more—for the story it tells reveals the truth behind Kvothe's legend.

You can buy the book here and read reviews as well.

This is the first book I have read on the iPad and after 23 pages I started to really enjoy the process of reading without paper... I changed the book into the font I liked and I highlighted beautifully written sentences and generally marveled at how much I love technology and the book.

Thought you might like it too. Or not. To be honest I was hooked at the title. Though not the cover art... But you know the old adage don't judge a book by its cover..

It is a great book, I read it when it came out. The next book has been published, but I need to go back and read this one again to jog my memory from five years ago!!

I love this book! I'm an avid fantasy reader (it's pretty much the only genre I read) and Patrick Rothfuss is absolutely one of the best. The next one is just as good :o)

I, too, am enjoying this series. I've already read the first book twice. I've read the second one and can hardly wait for the next! I haven't gone paperless, yet. There is just something about seeing all those books on my shelves and the weight and feel
of paper that is holding me back.

A growing list of interesting blogs

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Sorry for my lack of blogging. Yes I have been unable to take a breath and think about blogging at all as life screamed for me to focus on a few dead lines, health issues and family loving. It all had my head far away from blog land.

Did you miss me? Haha.

But then this morning I found myself looking for some blogging inspiration and asked friends to share their links on my Facebook page. You can read the growing list here. Please add your blog to if you fancy. It's such a lovely adventure of discovery for me as well as for others who have added their own. I am adding a few to my newsletter which should go out soon.

Out there in blog land where my head has been for some hours today I have found so many treats. Blogs are so rewarding, especially through my reader where I sometimes think I am editing my own magazine in a way in which the people I love and respect share their world.

Like the lovely Red Pepper quilts, who made a triangle quilt using my Magical Lands. I think it's very funky. Thanks Rita. So kind of you.

Other news is my best friend had a baby girl, her waters broke on the leap day and for a while we thought we might have a leap year baby, like my dad, but she came three days later. I have yet to see Mum and Bub but already am filled with thoughts for sewing. I am thinking about what i will make her... And I do get to play with pink YAY. Her mum loves red so there has to be a bit of red too.

My sister and her crew surprised me by stopping by on route to Margaret River last week. I got so many hugs from her one year old daughter who while she was here learned to say "hi", blow kisses and to rub noses. I was sad for ages after they left. Family is so important and I am so grateful that I love mine so much.

I am going to give myself an entire week to blog, to think about blogging, let those blog ideas form in my mind. I think I have met my clients expectations and can come out the other end with a breath, though if the work comes I am saying YES. I do plan to find some time to sew and share and make which will allow me time to breathe and think. Yes that wonderful feeling of comfort while stitching, I have missed you. Things are asking to be created.

P.S. I've just discovered Flipboard on the iPad which actually turns my RSS feed into a magazine! Sweet.

HA! Miss Fisher as I still think of her, used to like red..... that was my preconception too- I associate her with red, but I had a conversation with her about 10 years ago that went something like this "everything I own is red, people give me red things,
why red? I am over red" love your blog Saffron Katische xx

Yes I have missed your blogs and I have noticed you have been quiet of late! Hope all is ok and that life isn't getting in the way of taking time out for you. Looking forward to seeing the next installment of creativity from you xx

Lol @Lakehousewriter - I have it on good authority she still likes red. :-)

Sunday Sounds — Bon Iver Holocene

Saffron Craig - Sunday, February 26, 2012

Just fell in love with the dreamy sounds of Bon Iver. Beautiful video featuring hand knitted jumpers and woolen socks. My husband started itching just watching it, too funny.

Make sure you visit the website as well, pure poetry.

What Katie did next - glass brooches

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, February 22, 2012

What Katie did next, posted me a lovely glass brooch. Fancy that, it is made with one of the first fabrics I ever designed. I wear brooches all the time so I happily pinned it on right away. Thanks Katie it is lovely and your kind words really touched me.

I'm very lucky to get some truly amazing emails or facebook posts every now and again and this is one I thought I should share:

"Hi there Saffron, I just wanted to share these glass brooches that I have been making with your divine fabrics (they have been selling like HOTCAKES!). I always proudly let customers know who the clever designer is behind the fabrics (if they don't already know!). I would love to send you one as a thank you for creating these delicious designs."

So she did and I am thrilled to say they are brilliant. I will be buying up for friends and family that is for sure. Such clever people down in Tassie, It makes me want to move there...

You can follow her on facebook to read about her day to days.

And click here for her website so you too can buy her divine creations.

Thnak you again for such a lovely write-up. And yes, you should move to Tassie! Or at least pay us a visit - there is so much exciting crafty art and design happening here right now.

Valentines Day

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, February 15, 2012

I actually organized a date for Valentines day with my husband, you know baby sitters and a night on the town. But plans  changed after being up all night with a sick daughter who then took the day off school. Sort of the perfect day for me really as she kept on asking me to come to bed and cuddle her.

Instead of a date I cooked a yummy meal and did not end up leaving the house. So date night is tonight. We are going for a walk on the beach and will still be there until dark.

This is what I drew yesterday, it's coming along.

There are 14 pages of entries. Mine is called Triangle Fish. You can vote here if you like: Spoonflower contest (pleasedo)

As always, I'd love to hear your feedback on my design?

Have you ordered anything from Spoonflower?

I love it! I haven't used Spoonflower...Yet....Do you use special design software? I can't seem to get what is in my head onto my pc screen. Best of luck in the comp, I am going on there now, do the people vote, or do Spoonflower?? (PS. Voodoo Rabbit has
used Spoonflower-maybe you could ask them?)
Ana commented on 13-Feb-2012 10:52 PM
Your print is lovely but somehow the grid of triangles distracts me from the randomness of the fish (although I like the idea of the triangles). That wouldn't stop me from buying some though - I see a pair of little boy's shorts there for the summer.
porch days commented on 15-Feb-2012 02:11 PM
The fish are cute and I like the color palette. I voted for you.

This fabric is now available for purchase on Spoonflower. It looks even better in real life.

Sewing with a three year old

Saffron Craig - Thursday, February 09, 2012

It is funny the memories that stick from being a child and I have many memories of sewing and making things. I think that is is nice to ask children to start sewing and designing as early as they can make their own decision about it. If they feel involved I think it becomes part of who they are.

Okie my nephew is three. I wanted to do a simple sewing project with him when he showed interest in one of the softie panels.  He wanted to sew his puppy on a shirt and not make it into a toy. So the puppy was neatly cut out leaving a bit of white space around the puppy.

I asked him to practice pinning, which he was really good at. No pricked fingers and these needles are really sharp.

Funny how three year olds love putting things in rows.

Then we pinned the puppy onto his T-shirt exactly as he wanted it. Easy decision; the green one on the front the grey one on the back.

I asked him to push the foot on the machine and my surprise he was really gentle and slow. I also asked him to sit at the machine and  managed to sew along one straight line of the puppy before his attention frayed.

He put the T-shirt on as soon as it was finished.  I asked if I could take his picture but he ran away at the thought of it. I snapped this one before he hid in the garden.

What sewing projects have you done with your little ones?

My (nearly) 1 year old is too young for sewing (still at the eating the pins stage - if I let him!) but I look forward to him developing an interest in crafting. And the t-shirt is lovely - might have to make one as a birthday present...

How wonderful you took the time to sew with a 3 year old. Youngsters can do more than we often give them credit for. The shirt is very cute.
