Let's help

Saffron Craig - Friday, February 20, 2009
I try to add an entry every week to touch base remind myself where I am in my design world.

So here I am in Sydney with the rain falling. I am a lover of rain I feel like I can walk further. However as we were planning our camping holiday this weekend we are wondering what we will do. We were going to drive to Wilsons Prom that is now ablaze. I feel so saddened and am dreaming about the fires at night and feel haunted. I send love and positive thoughts to all of you who are affected by the fires in the South and the floods to the North of us.

Turning the sadness into action I've sent a few owl softies to Ann Marie Holt who's helping out with putting together bags for little ones who lost everything. If you want to help you can read more here: beyondpinkandblue.blogspot.com/2009/02/rainbow-comfort-packs-for-little-ones.html

Also I put in motion a fund raiser which is to be a collaboration with local talents, selling the items and donating the profits. I am very much into doing things you love so their skills will blend nicely with mine. So let's hope I can tell you more soon.

On the design front I am drawing native trees and then looking at abstracting and smoothing them. Adding leaves and colour. It makes me feel like I step into an alternative universe where time is non existent. So I am watching the time for the 3 o'clock pick up and a very tired daughter. Thankfully she loves water and I can soak off all the glue and paint in a warm aromatic salty bath.

Getting organised

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Well it is "get organised" time. New shelves, new boxes, new spaces. Four bags of rubbish last count. I am doing it bit by bit, hours here and there and I tell myself this is part of the business.
So many people I know like cleaning and I think to myself "but everything I do is messy". Reading books, sewing, drawing, painting, scrap booking, screen printing, cooking, playing with children - anything.
Any how I know that I will love our space with everything being stacked and stored neat and tidy. Truth be told Patrick did most of it. I am still learning to let go of things, anything.

Can't decide which designs to print! It'll be a bit longer before I can offer you some new fabrics, but maybe you can donate some fabric money to the Bushfire appeal in the meantime...

Changed my mind

Saffron Craig - Friday, February 06, 2009

I have decided not to attend Mosman market after all...we will try for March. We did not get enough time to get organized and the prospect of standing in the heat all day isn't that enticing either.

We were blogged this morning by www.stephbond.com. Stephany's blog is  about  cool Australian art, design and products to keep you in the know. Thanks Steph.

Designing for paper?

Saffron Craig - Monday, February 02, 2009
When I was at the Quilt and Craft show last year i remember thinking I would so love to make stamps and cards with my designs.

So we were very excited when a few weeks ago an American scrapbooking company that loves our fabrics asked us to show some other designs for a possible collaboration on a new range. Stickers, paper, stamps, everything scrapbooking!
If successful the collection will be launched in July this year. We are really very pleased and excited so I suppose we will let you know when we know more!

Out come the quirky whimsical and characterised drawings. The best part is I can go crazy with colours, and I can use tiny fine lines. Love it!

Are any of you fabric fanatics into scrapbooking?

I can't wait to see the papers made from your designs! I hope the elephants and owls make it into the paper line!

Say thanks with hand made soap...

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, January 27, 2009
I've had a quandary! My little girl finishes her once a week long day-care today to go to Kindy. She has been there for six months and had 6, sometimes 7 people looking after her as it is open long hours. So it has been such a quandary as to what to give to say thanks.

Last week I had a real urge for chocolate cake while I was at a course with some friends. So we went searching however all the cafes were closed. But then we stumbled across some really lovely soaps and I thought phew, here's my presents! So I bought 7 handmade soaps and wrapped them in my hand printed fabrics and tied them up with nice string.
Good to have some spare fat quarters lying around I say!

Who likes fairies?

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Well here I am typing after my daughter’s bed time, that’s when I usually get some “me time” when a sweet little ring tail possum decided to move in and hide under our stove. Just one of the surprises we get living with bush in our backyard. One hour later with a very concerned daughter back in bed I am back again and what was I going to say…

To get back into the design swing today I visited my favourite designers Anna Marie Horner, Valerie Wells, Echino and a quick squiz at Amy Butler. That’s as far as I got and thought, yes there is still room out there for me and my designs. I bought some Anna Marie Horner fabric from the sketch book range a while back, and it has combined beautifully with my own designs. Great how that happens.

So I have been drawing for three weeks. Even on Christmas day I found a few hours to draw, every time I close my eyes there is something there, an image floating, a flower, a bird, a fairy who insists that I open my eyes and sketch it. Capturing it is always a challenge! I have filled an entire book with elements. My house has sketches everywhere.

I am so in love with yellow at the moment. I have tried on many a yellow garment all to no avail, I am not a mellow yellow girl after all. So it will have to be in my environment.

A question to you: Who likes Fairies? Are there a few of us or many? Patrick has a hunch I should place birds, butterflies, crickets and winged animals where my fairies are?

I quite like fairies. but am unlikely to use "fairy" fabric as I have 3 sons. Birds and butterflies are more unisexual and fit in well both with fantasy and "reality" type projects. Having said that I do have a fondness for dragons as well. Hope this helps...Sharon

Ohhh, I LOVE fairies and love all your fabrics with fairies... I have four daughters so it's easy for me to get caught up in planning projects with fairy fabric (which there doesn't seem to be enough of out there). I would love seeing more fairy fabric and any other magical creatures you decide to sketch. I do, however, love birds too. crickets would be great for those families with boys. I say go with your gut feeling and do fairies to your hearts content and do some coordinating prints with Patrick's suggestions. Did this help?

I love fairies too! So do my daughters(I have 3) and all my sisters and nieces. In fact, although my 2 boys won't admit it, I have caught them playing fairies with the girls. Of course, I wouldn't make them a fairy dress ;-) but I really like Melissa's suggestion of making bird and insect prints that would coordinate with the fairies. Please don't stop printing fairies though, that would break my heart! I better get over to your shop and buy some!!

my daughter and i are a fan of the fairies, but some crickets and birds would be a great addition. We love watching creatures in the garden. I can't get enough of interesting fabric design, especially in your lovely illustrated style - inspiration for my 3 year old to work on her drawing skills! She's getting my bug for fabric appreciation! I say mix it up, but maybe make the fairies really small, hiding in amongst the other creatures.

I was telling my sister how surprised I was that Kris (my husband) preferred the cute baby quilt I was doing rather than what I usually do. She then told me that her husband loved the embroidered fairy quilt she had done most of all.
So who knows...I know I will not stop doing the things I like as it will become a chore, but it has made me look outside my square a bit.....so you have to follow your heart.

Hippo New Year

Saffron Craig - Thursday, January 08, 2009
I hope everyone's had a great start to the new year. I for one have been feverishly drawing and designing over the last few weeks, my favourite part of the design process.

Yesterday I got this great email from Amy Gunson of Badskirt with a photo of these awesome hippos she makes, one of them from my gingko blossom fabric. Thanks for that Amy, it's adorable, in fact, I want one.

I love Amy's Hippo's...I'm waiting for an excuse to get one!
I've just found your site today and super excited to see some fresh fabric designs from a fellow Sydneysider.
Finding out this week if baby nbr 3 is a boy or girl so I'll be back for quilt supplies!Do you do a regular Sydney market?

I love the Christmas print. Could you offer it as a card, or as a tea towel?
Happy New Year to you :-)

Happy new year to you!

Last market of the year

Saffron Craig - Thursday, December 18, 2008

I will be at the Manly village school market again this weekend selling the new grey fabrics.

This week has had us busy refolding fabrics, putting them into envelopes and putting labels on. Stamps and more stamps. So thanks to all who joined up and merry Christmas to everyone. We hope to see you back soon.

I was at the Young Blood market on the weekend. I made up a dozen girls dresses up and sold most of them so Patrick added them to the online shop.  If you're in Australia I could post it to you before Christmas.

I've also just started to design the next range of prints. So many ideas. Phew what a huge year for me. But so much fun.
