How I got the Owl quilt finished: a big bold stripy one

Saffron Craig - Monday, October 17, 2011

With the arrival of the Owls In Trees a few weeks ago I was inspired to make a quilt. I had wanted to make a quilt in this style for a long time with big bold strips of patterns.

A day that was going to be spend doing school holiday type things, my parents arrived and whisked my daughter away for the day. Wohoo suddenly the day was mine. An empty house. Silence. Needing a chill out I took the opportunity and decided to make a good start at quilting the top. I had a day to finish it for a magazine who asked to feature it in their craft section.

I like to stitch and listen to telly. Thanks to the ABC and iView I caught up on Doctor Who, Number one Ladies Detective Agency and Twenty Something -  I loved it, totally cracks me up. I did however let The Slap slip.

I don't remember when I last watched that much telly but it sure was fun and peaceful as I wove the thread through the three layers. Seeing it come to fruition. Seriously the best part of making a quilt is the stitching by hand.

I did remember to take a few pictures along the way.

To baste the quilt I use an adhesive which temporarily bonds the layers together. For me it is fast and so easy.

This picture is a bit yellow as the bamboo batting is cream, though i don't think it alters the overall look of the quilt.

The spray is $7.00 from the local screen printers. It washes out in water. I can baste a lot of quilts with one can so it lasts over a year.

Then I drew on the parallel lines with a chalk pencil that washes off. It makes it easier to stitch if I can follow a line. I used pearle cotton for this quilt. The three middle stripes in red and pale pink on either end. I would have preferred to us white instead of the pale pink but I had run out and I needed to finish it so I made do with what I had. I'm good at that!

Then attached the binding deciding on using the same white fabric as I used in the stripe.

Made use of my Eames Elephant. Isn't he the best. Everyday he makes me smile.

I finished it the morning it  was to be picked up, I begging Sequoia to hold it up for me so I could photograph it. She is a trooper as it's quite heavy. "Mum my arms!"

I was trimming a thread as the courier knocked on the door. He was patient as I boxed it up while Sequoia made him smile with lots of typical 6-year old's questions. I wished the quilt luck hoping it would be good enough to make it. Go quilt go, I secretly hope it is good enough or inspiring enough to be on the page after Sarah Fielke's quilt! Fingers crossed.
